Visit-to-Visit HbA_1c Variability Is Associated with Complications in Patients With Newly Diagnosed Type 2 Diabetes

This recent study published by the American Diabetes Association in Diabetes Care aims to investigate the association of a patient’s HbA_1c and how they may be at risk for both cardiovascular events and microvascular complications. The study design is a retrospective cohort study, which analyzed data from patients who were newly diagnosed with diabetes, and then had at least 5 HbA_1c measurements taken. A patient was categorized into HbA_1c variability score (HVS) which was calculated as the percentage of the number of changes in HbA_1c >0.5% among all HbA_1c measurements in an individual. The study found that higher variability in HbA_1c is associated with increased risks of all-cause mortality, cardiovascular events, and microvascular complications of diabetes independently of a high HbA_1c.
